Williams Named 2024 Dickie McCamey Diversity Scholarship Recipient

2024 Diversity Scholarship Recipient Charity Williams

Penn State Law in University Park student Charity Williams has been named as the 2024 recipient of the Dickie, McCamey & Chilcote (“DMC”) Penn State Law Diversity Scholarship. Ms. Williams has been awarded $10,000 and a summer clerkship in DMC’s Pittsburgh office.

“I am both grateful and humbled to have this opportunity,” Ms. Williams said.

Ms. Williams, a native of Atlanta, is a rising second-year student at Penn State Law, where she is a member of the Student Bar Association and the Black Law Students Association. She recently participated in the Shook Scholars Institute in Kansas City, Missouri, and attended the Mid-Atlantic Black Law Students Association Regional Convention in Baltimore.

“Ms. Williams’ academic and research background is impressive. The selection committee was especially taken with her personal statement’s discussion of legacy and endurance – two major values which overlap with Dickie McCamey’s approach to providing legal services,” said Michele Eagle, Co-Chair of the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. “We are excited to see Ms. Williams flourish in our summer clerkship program and proud to support her continued achievement as a first-generation law student.”

Before enrolling at Penn State Law, Ms. Williams attended Louisiana State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Communications at Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors College.

“Having the opportunity to work with a firm like Dickie McCamey while also being afforded a diversity scholarship has truly been an awe-inspiring experience. Oftentimes, the different layers of my identity, being a first-generation Black law student from the South, both compliment and complicate my interactions with the law,” Ms. Williams said. “Attempting to navigate a space that has historically been unrepresentative of people with backgrounds like mine has challenged me in numerous ways and serves as a constant reminder of the work that needs to be done within the legal field, and I’m so grateful to be supported by a firm like Dickie McCamey, who has made such significant contributions to furthering diversity in the legal field.”

“It is so wonderful to see such a deserving student receive this impactful scholarship,” said Victor Romero, interim dean of Penn State Law and the School of International Affairs, Maureen B. Cavanaugh Distinguished Faculty Scholar, and professor of law. “Charity epitomizes everything this scholarship stands for, and we are so grateful to Dickie McCamey for their continued commitment to diversity in the legal profession.”

The scholarship provides tuition support for first-year law students enrolled at Penn State Law in University Park, whose gender, race, ethnic, cultural and/or national background contribute to the diversity of the student body. In addition to the scholarship, a summer clerkship is awarded to the recipient. The firm has pledged $50,000 to the University over five years to fund the Dickie, McCamey & Chilcote Penn State Law Diversity Scholarship.

Dickie McCamey, a national, full-service law firm, currently employs 19 attorneys who have earned undergraduate degrees from The Pennsylvania State University and 11 attorneys who have earned their Juris Doctor degrees from Penn State Law in University Park and Penn State Dickinson Law, located in Carlisle.
