Dickie McCamey announces plans to move headquarters
Dickie McCamey, one of Pittsburgh’s oldest law firms, will move to a new location in Gateway Center, ending a 38-year occupancy of Two PPG Place, the law firm announced today.
In April 2025, the law firm will move 300-yards to the west across Stanwix Street and will begin its 120th year of continuous operation within Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle.
Dickie McCamey has signed a 15-year lease for the nearly 80,000 rentable square feet on five floors at Four Gateway Center.
“Moving from PPG Place will be an emotional process because we have been treated with respect and courtesy from Highwoods Properties,” said Christopher T. Lee, Managing Attorney of the Pittsburgh office of Dickie McCamey. “They have been attentive landlords, and their entire support staff has been exemplary.”
“We’ve enjoyed a robust employment scenario and are poised to have over 200 attorneys for the first time in the firm’s history,” Lee said. There are over 125 attorneys and an additional 150 employees in the Pittsburgh office. Dickie McCamey employs nearly 450 employees in 20 locations in 11 states.
Before the pandemic, the firm formed a committee to evaluate the needs for work space. The committee was composed of a cross-section of attorneys and administrators and eventually hired real estate brokers at JLL to understand the ever-evolving legal and business landscape.
“Together with our broker, Perkins Eastman architects, and ongoing input from lawyers and staff, we refined our vision for our firm,” Lee said. “Ultimately, moving to Four Gateway Center was the best fit for this vision.”
That vision includes a modernization of space to reflect the realities of today’s practice, including smaller offices uniform in size; more common spaces to encourage social interaction; a maximizing of natural lighting; and “hoteling” of offices for those lawyers not in need of an office every day.
Among the factors contributing to the need for less space is that the pandemic has taught DMC the value of remote working, and most staff have the option to work remotely one day a week. Additionally, the firm has employed a more effective use of technology in securely digitizing records, eliminating paper usage and storage. The amount of storage space needed to file records continues to wane.
Dickie McCamey has been in PPG Place since September 1984 after a 12-year run at the U.S. Steel Building. From 1928 to 1972, DMC called the Grant Building home. Prior to that, the firm’s headquarters were located in the Union Trust Building, Peoples (Bank) Building, and a property on Diamond Street (now Forbes Avenue) near the Allegheny County Courthouse.
